A sweet way to show appreciation, this recipe is easy to make and good enough to eat! You probably even have some of these ingredients in your pantry. In a bowl, mash up 4 strawberries with a fork and add the freshly squeezed juice of half a lemon. Mix in one cup of extra-virgin olive oil and add two and a half cups of sugar (white or brown). Stir until well-blended and pour it into a mason jar or covered container.

Love Poem

Buying a mass-produced card with a pre-written note can seem a bit, well, impersonal. Don’t get scared off just because you’re feeling speechless. A quick YouTube search for “How To Write A Love Poem” produces quite a few foolproof poetry exercises that will bring out your inner Shakespeare. A love poem works for just about anyone you care for and will be especially well-received by your mom or the mother of your children.

Mother’s Day Card

Make a note of a fond memory or jot down a quick list of things you love and appreciate about her: How she attended every school field trip; Her moral support through tough times; The way she used to sing you to sleep when you were afraid of the dark. If you have an unwavering case of writer’s block, tap into the works of many great minds via the internet. Pick a free printable Mother’s Day card from Pinterest and pair it with a borrowed quote from a famous poet. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • A mother’s love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible. - Marion C. Garretty
  • If I had a single flower for every time I think of you, I could walk forever in my garden. - Claudia Grandi
  • A mom’s hug lasts long after she lets go. - Author Unknown

Gift Certificate

We wish we could pamper all the great moms in our lives with a day at a five-star spa, but there are less expensive ways to provide a retreat from mundane responsibilities. Handmade gift certificates are a perfect present for any mom! Using stationary or sticky notes, handwrite gift certificates redeemable for a sparkling clean bathroom, after-dinner dish duty, washing her car, scooping the kitty litter, running errands, or walking the dogs. Bonus points if you remind her next month when she’s forgotten to redeem your generous offer!

Breakfast in Bed

A time-honored treat for every occasion, serving a simple breakfast in bed lets a hard-working mom take a deserved break. You don’t have to be a master chef to gather some nutritious goodies from the kitchen: Fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, toast with jam, and cereal are great options. Add a glass of orange juice, coffee, or hot tea to complete the meal. Arranged on a tray with a hand-picked flower, breakfast will start her day on a sweet note.

Let’s face it: No gift to your mother can ever equal her gift to you – life. But a small gesture of gratitude is all you need to properly celebrate her.
